He was a constant supporter of the Olympic Movement and was awarded the Olympic Order in Gold in 2013 during a ceremony at the Vatican. In accepting the award, His holiness said:
“I wish to encourage institutions such as yours, which promote sports – especially to the younger generations – as a way of training for peace, mutual sharing and harmonious coexistence of people. Sports tend to unite rather than divide!”
OTU President John Kotsifas today expressed Oceania Taekwondo’s sense of loss at the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. President Kotsifas stated:
“In the Pacific region there exists a deep-rooted Christian faith that shapes their communities and traditions. We Honor the deep Christian faith held by many Pacific Islanders—a faith that is not only a source of strength and identity, but also a guiding light in family, community, sport and cultural life.”
May he rest in eternal peace.
